The Office of Pre-Professional Advising (OPPA) provides guidance and support to students interested in pursuing careers in the health and legal professions. Specifically, OPPA provides information about the field of law and a wide variety of health-related fields such as allopathic (M.D.), osteopathic (D.O.), and veterinary (D.V.M.) medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, podiatry, chiropractic, physician assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy and public health.
OPPA’s services include one-on-one and group advising as well as assistance with four key focus areas of Pre-Professional Advising for students planning to attend professional school: 1) Exploration, 2) Preparation, 3) Application, and 4) Decision-Making.
- introduce you to information concerning the various legal and health-related professions.
- help you narrow your focus to a legal or health profession of most interest to you.
- provide resources to help you explore more about specific legal or health professions.
- assist you in choosing a major, minor, or certificate program to meet your interests and health professional or law school entrance requirements.
- guide you toward taking the correct prerequisite courses for the health professional or law school you choose to pursue.
- provide you with information about possible volunteer, community service, shadowing, and/or research opportunities.
- help introduce you to numerous UCF Pre-Professional Student Organizations.
- help you identify the health professional or law schools where your application can be most competitive.
- tell you when and which exam (e.g., LSAT, MCAT, DAT, OAT, PCAT, etc.) to take for your chosen professional school.
- help you identify which application service to use when applying to your chosen professional schools.
- link you to workshops to assist you with developing the skill sets needed to write personal statements and interview effectively.
- assist you in weighing the “pros” and “cons” of the acceptance offers you have received.
- apprise you of various potential financial aid resources.
- wish you all the best after you have made your decision and accepted an offer to a health professional or law school, and we’ll ask you to keep in touch!
